On January 26th, we will be starting promptly at Noon and will walk over to Oceanit's offices on Fort Street Mall at 12:30pm for a tour of their office and some of their James Bond-type gadgets. Because it is a secured facility, we need to give them the names of all attending, so it is very important to sign up on the Doodle The speaker is Dr. Jeffrey Watumull, who is Director of Artificial Intelligence at Oceanit and principal investigator on programs for DARPA. He received BS degrees, summa cum laude, in Mathematics and Evolutionary Biology from Harvard in 2009, a Masters of Philosophy in Linguistics from Cambridge in 2010 (as a Gates Cambridge Scholar), and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from MIT in 2015. His research has centered on the mathematical optimality of human cognition, specifically in the domain of language. He has published numerous papers, and his work is frequently covered in the media. At Oceanit, Jeffrey has embarked on research to develop strong AI: computational systems equipped with human-level intelligence in domains both specific (e.g., language) and general (e.g., pattern recognition). Despite his imposing curriculum vitæ, Jeffrey will give us lay folk a picture of the basics of AI and where it’s headed. |
