A graduate of Yale University with a B.A. in Architecture and 30 years of experience at Coldwell Banker Realty Honolulu, Doug is a Vice President and the Projects Director for the company. Doug has represented many of the major developers on the island, launching brand new condominium complexes in Ala Moana, Kaka`ako, Makiki, and Waikiki. He was the Sales Manager for the Moana Pacific, the Cove Waikiki, and the Waiea and Anaha buildings which started off Ward Village, the Howard Hughes development. He is currently representing the developer of The Park on Ke`eaumoku mixed use project of nearly 1,000 units. The speakers for the Friday, Oct 25 meeting will be from the American Foudation for Suicide Prevention. Suicide is a leading cause of death in Hawaii yet many are reluctant to approach the subject due to shame, stigma, and misunderstanding. By raising awareness around suicide prevention and the impact of suicide, we can all play a role in averting another loss of a loved one. Learn more about the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and our efforts to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.
Kathleen became involved with AFSP Hawaii in 2005 when she lost her Brother Michael to suicide. Kathleen is the Chair of the Rotary Action group for Mental Health Initiatives for District 5000. She believes that Rotary can be a natural partner for helping with mental health related programs . Kathleen works for the HI Adult Mental Health Division and resides in Kaneohe.
Karen Ng has been involved with the HI Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention since 2021 when she moved to Oahu from Los Angeles. She was the event chair for Hike for Hope 2022 & 2023 and the Out of the Darkness Walk in 2023. She is currently the co-chair of the chapter and dedicates all her efforts towards suicide prevention in honor of her youngest sister, Karine, whom she lost to suicide in 2018.

The speaker this Friday is Darren Okimoto, PhD. He was named associate director of Hawai'i Sea Grant in February, 2015 and also serves as the Extension Leader for Hawai'i Sea Grant. He is responsible for the programmatic management of Hawai'i Sea Grant extension faculty and staff and their activities, and also participates in state and regional collaborative projects that focus on Sea Grant focus areas associated with outreach and education. Okimoto earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in zoology from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa and a PhD in biology from the University of Delaware. He was hired by Hawai'i Sea Grant in 2002 as an Extension Specialist and stationed full time in American Samoa for three years at the American Samoa Community College prior to moving back to Hawai‘i in 2005. Amy Kelley is an AARP volunteer speaker. She is also a Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Brain Health Trainer, and Pilates instructor and the owner of a small business which specializes in fitness and brain health for people aged 50 and older. Amy serves on the Hawaii Brain Health Initiative’s Brain Health and Risk Reduction Action Team, where she works with a multi-disciplinary group of health professionals on ways to empower the people of Hawai’i to decrease their risk for developing dementia, maximize brain health, and improve quality of life. Speaker for Friday, Nov 22 is Dr. Ryan Smith, who will be speaking about how to control cholesterol. Dr. Ryan started with Hawaii Heart Associates in 2021 as one of the founding cardiologists. Prior to that he served in the United States Army for 15 years as an internal medicine physician and cardiologist to include two deployments to Afghanistan with the 10th Mountain and 101st Airborne Divisions. He graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and went on to train at Tripler Army Medical Center as well as the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for cardiology fellowship. In addition to his medical degree, Dr. Smith graduated with a business degree from Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA. Within the field of cardiology, he has an interest in pacemaker and ICD implantation, echocardiography, and cholesterol management. It is a personal goal of his to start the first primary prevention cholesterol clinic in Hawaii as well as advance awareness for sudden cardiac death and CPR training/AED education in the community. Outside of his professional practice, he enjoys golfing, surfing, diving and running. This past year, he completed his fourth marathon with hopes to continue that tradition yearly. Dr Smith is currently affiliated with Castle Medical Center, Kuakini Medical Center, Maui Memorial Medical Center and Hilo Medical Center. Rotary International President Nominee (RIPN) Sangkoo Yun will be attending our club meeting on Friday, January 10th and members from the Rotary Clubs of Honolulu Pau Hana and Pearlridge will be joining West Honolulu Rotary. RSVPs are required by Tuesday, as seating is limited. His attendance may be preempted by a meeting with the Mayor, so if that happens, we will have a multi club meeting.
RIPN Sangkoo Yun will be the RI President when we have the Convention in Honolulu in June 2027 and he is here for a site visit. He is from the Rotary Club of Sae Hanyan, Seoul, Korea and has been a Rotarian since 1987. He has a bachelor's and master's degrees in Architecture. In 2012 Ms Custer received the 40 Under 40 award given to those identied as the best and brightest young business persons in Honolulu. This was a passion for her - creating activities that were fun and engaging. For the last 20 years, Ms Custer has dedicated herself to the study and advancement of childhood development. Ms Custer is a mother to 2 boys, ages 6 and 8. Together they wrote and illustrated a children’s nance book published in November. Do You Have A Money Monster? Because her children participated in writing the book, the storyline is remarkably entertaining. Ms Custer is now on a mission to visit the 153 elementary schools and 25 public libraries on Oahu to bring our keiki this nancial awareness. She knows if elementary school-aged children receive this important money management knowledge now, they will have an invaluable advantage in life, as all children deserve. |

Please bring friends to hear Steven S. Alm, current Prosecuting Attorney of Honolulu, speak on February 7th, Noon, and he will be talking abour crime in Honolulu. Alm was elected in November 2020 with the mandate of Restoring Trust to the Honolulu Prosecutors Office. Prosecutor Alm was a circuit Court Judge from May 2001 to August 2016 and presided over 200 jury trials and thousands of guilty pleas and sentencing. He helped create Hawaii's Opportunity Probation with Enforcement, also known as as the HOPE Probation Program.
He also served three and a half years as Adult Drug Court judge. Judge Alm was named Hawaii Jurist of the Year. From 1994 through 2001, Judge Alm was the United States Attorney for the District of Hawaii. During his tenure, the office focused on corruption, white collar crime and large scale drug trafficking. The office also worked with police to investigage, capture and prosecute the ring responsible for hundres of violent purse snatchings aimed at Japanese tourists. He also led the law enforcement effort in the Weed & Seed strategy that reduced crime in Chantown and Kalihi-Palama by over 70% in three years. From 1985 through 1994, Judge Alm served as a deputy prosecutor at the Honolulu Prosecutor's Office. He was a Felony Division Team Captain and then the Director of the District and Family Court Division.

Under her leadership, the agency has become a robust portal for assessing and triaging the full spectrum of individuals and families experiencing homelessness. IHS has grown to include a unique array of homeless services that include street medicine focused on mentally ill; an urban rooftop farm, full service homeless service fairs that bring together service providers, community and church members to create a community of care in various neighborhoods on Oahu. Most recently, IHS opened the first and only community based triage center to deliver medically assisted detox for alcohol and drug addiction.I HS has also ended homelessness for thousands of individuals with housing, while specialty shelters that offer medical respite and ambulatory detox for homeless individuals add options beyond traditional shelter. Born and raised in Hawaii as a daughter of immigrant Chinese parents, Connie attended and graduated from Mun Lun School to ensure that her cultural roots would not be lost. She attended McKinley High School and went on to earn a BS and MSN in Nursing from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. At different point in her career, she managed a physician’s practice, developed treatment and rehab programs, and served as the Director of Nursing at the Hawaii State Hospital. Connie established the first nurse-run mental health clinic in Ka’u on the Big Island of Hawaii as a member of an interdisciplinary group of University of Hawaii faculty in health sciences. Mitchell’s diverse career also included pastoral work and teaching mental health nursing at the University of Hawaii. Her values and passion for social and environmental justice is rooted in her Chinese family upbringing. Working hard and collaborating well have been themes in her life’s work. Connie has established herself as a seasoned non-profit leader by collaborating with a host of businesses, academic institutions, faith communities and every level of government. Connie has served on the Oahu Workforce Development Council, The Board of Trustees for the Pacific School of REligion in Berkeley, California and also on the State’s Department of Highway Safety Council. |
