ASSETS SCHOOL
Paul Singer Head of School

A self described "Assets student," Singer  self described "Assets student," Singer came to Assets in 2007 from The Country School in Los Angeles where he'd been Head of School for nearly 30 years, serving students with a profile  very similar to Assets'. He has served on the faculty at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) since 1975, has a B.A. in Sociology, an M.A. in Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education and an M.A.  in Educational Administration and Supervision, all from CSUN. He completed all Doctoral coursework in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of Southern California. Singer graduated high school with a 1.9 GPA and his parents were told he was never college material. It was only through his luck being born into a family of means, the perseverance of his mother and grandmother, and the intervention of education mentors that he sought assistance and found his calling in education.

Fern Elementary School needs volunteers to assist with their upcoming beautification project on Saturday, March 30, 2019. The campus needs external improvements done including moving rocks and basic gardening around the campus as well as moving the school’s Hawaiian Ahu to a different place on campus (this will involve moving rocks across campus and cleaning the area where it will be relocated). Please come down and lend a hand to make Fern Elementary a wonderful place for students to learn, grow, and play!

Spring time is around the corner and we will be decorating the Ronald McDonald Judd Hillside House to spruce up the facility and welcome in a cheerful season for the families residing there while their children receive treatment. Volunteers will be making simple DIY crafts and putting up these decorations in the common areas of the house OR putting together care baskets for each family living at the Ronald McDonald House filled with travel necessities and on the go snacks. Please wear comfortable clothing and get ready to tap into your inner interior decorator!  Bentos will be served!

Help to end polio now
Since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative 30 years ago, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases a year to just 22 cases in 2017. To sustain this progress, and protect all children from polio, Rotary has committed to raising US$50 million per year in support of global polio eradication efforts. Without full funding and political commitment, this paralyzing disease could return to previously polio-free countries, putting children everywhere at risk.
Your donation helps Rotary and its partners reach every child with the polio vaccine. Thanks to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, your contribution will be tripled, getting us even closer to a polio-free world.

Makati West 50th anniversary tentative dates
I know you've attended our sister club anniversaries in the past or showed some interest, so here's some information about the Makati West 50th anniversary. I received  tentative dates for their 50th anniversary from Past President Jay Tambunting. Their welcome dinner will be on November 22 and the 50th Anniversary Ball will be on November 23.

Five years ago they held their 45th anniversary in August, but the reason it was held in August was to accommodate then RI President Gary Huang's schedule.

Hope you can all join me in Makati in November 2019!

Thank you,
Mike Kato
