Waipahu Aloha Clubhouse:
State of Hawaii - Department of Health - Adult Mental Health Division

Background:

There is a total of nine Clubhouses in the state of Hawaii and the Waipahu Aloha Clubhouse is one of the five Clubhouses located on the island of Oahu.

The Waipahu Aloha Clubhouse was established on December 1, 1997 and offers a unique member-driven psychosocial rehabilitation program for adults living with mental illness. All participation in the Clubhouse is on a voluntary basis and anyone who is 18 years or older and has an Axis I Diagnosis can become a member.

Over the years, we have served more than 800 consumers seeking mental wellness. The members of the Clubhouse are offered a safe and supportive environment and many opportunities to achieve or regain the confidence and skills needed for successful community integration. There are for example work 5 units in our Clubhouse where both staff and members work side by side with tasks which mimics actual workplaces: The Kitchen Unit, The Facilities Unit, The Clerical Unit, The Membership and Media unit, and the Career Development Unit.

The Clubhouse, moreover, strictly follows the International Standards, consensual agreed upon by the worldwide Clubhouse community. The principles expressed in these Standards are at the heart of the Clubhouse community's success:

• The standards helps people with mental illness stay out of hospitals while achieving social, financial, educational, and vocational goals;
• Serve as a “bill of rights” for members and a code of ethics for Clubhouse staff, boards and administrators, and a reminder that Clubhouses must be places that offer respect and
   opportunities to members;
• Provide the basis for assessing Clubhouse quality through the Clubhouse International Accreditation™ process.

One of the standards for example, addresses the importance of no staff or member only space, all spaces at the Clubhouse are accessible to everyone so that we all feel equal.
