35th Annual Texaco Honolulu District DOE Elementary Speech Festival at McKinley High School on April 5. Thank you to the members who came on Saturday to be judges. 7am breakfast followed by instructions 8am report to assigned rooms 8:30 session 1; 10:00 session 2 11:15 Awards Assembly. Pau 12:15pm Students in grades 3 through 5 from 33 schools participate in categories of choral reading, group interpretation, oral interpretive reading, poetry, storytelling; all noncompetitive events. The desired outcome is for the students to develop and improve their oral communication skills and practice skills to be effective communicators (a DOE General Learner Outcome goal). A high priority for the Honolulu District is to develop students’ oral communication skills, one of the three components of the Language Arts curriculum. The Honolulu District and Texaco Hawaii work jointly on the Elementary Speech Festival to encourage elementary schools to emphasize oral communication skills. The purpose of this event is to provide opportunities for students to meet the following content standards: A. Students will communicate orally using various forms; B. Students will apply knowledge of verbal and nonverbal language to communicate effectively; C. Students will adapt messages appropriate to audience, purpose, and situation; and D. Students will demonstrate confidence as communicators, and find value and satisfaction in communicating with others. |
