I have been an educator for 35 years as a teacher, administrator and consultant in elementary and secondary schools, in private and public schools (mostly public), and worked with a variety of socio-economic levels and second language learners. I lived and taught in Saipan for two and one half years back in the 1990s. I currently work as the Deputy Director for the Hawaii State Public Charter School Commission. I I have three children ages 26, 24, and 22 - Mikaela, Markus and Elle. I moved my family to Hawaii fifteen years ago and my children were blessed to grow up in such a beautiful place. My Why: Through interpersonal connection, create genuine and meaningful relationships that empower individuals to lead and act, using their uniqueness to influence those around them. EXPERIENCE Hawaii State Public Charter School Commission (October 2017 - Present) - Federal Programs manager - School Lead - Interim Deputy Director - Deputy Director We are the sole Charter School Authorizer in the state of Hawaii. Our portfolio consists of 38 schools across ve islands. Our schools are Hawaiian culture focused (place based, language based, community based) and serve a variety of socioeconomic demographics providing instruction in diverse modes (project-based, traditional, virtual/blended, etc). We report to our Commissioners and execute the daily work of engaging schools in contract monitoring and compliance Appointed Interim Deputy Director in February 2020; Prior to that, I led our Achievement Team which consisted of half of our oce personnel; prior to that I worked directly with our schools receiving Federal dollars to support underserved students. foehrWARD THINKING, Owner/Education Consultant ● Contracted with Hawaii Catholic Schools (2011- 2017) to provide principal coaching and professional development support for Catholic schools in Hawaii. ● Supported and generated an update of the Hawaii Catholic Schools academic standards in ELA and Math ● Worked collaboratively with the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent to support instructional and leadership development and coaching around 21st Century skills. ● Other various small contracts with schools focused on eective communication with Parents and community engagement Prior School Leadership experience I have been a school administrator since 1996 in California and Hawaii. I have worked as a Principal, Assistant Principal, District/state level administrator and consultant in both private and public settings. I have worked in Elementary and Secondary schools and spent a year as an Adjunct Professor for the University of Portland coaching teachers in their rst year of placement. I have led schools with a variety of student demographics, racial diversity and socio-economic backgrounds. ● I began my education career as a 4th grade teacher. I taught overseas (Saipan) and in secondary school. ● I have signicant experience in the areas of classroom instruction, parent communication and classroom management. ● I spent two years at an International Baccalaureate school in Hawaii. I was the Lower School head as we transitioned to the Primary Years Programme and worked with the Middle School and High School as they implemented the Middle Years and Diploma Programmes. ● Please contact me with any questions. Professional Development ● National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA) conference presenter 2022, 2023, 2024 ● Attended ASCD, NACSA, and National Charter School convention ● Certied Red Team coach ● Harvard Project Zero - 2018 and 2019 ● Completed Improvement Science course through edX online ● Conducted and led Leadership development for Hawaii Charter School leaders ● Used Harvard PZC protocols to facilitate whole sta information sessions to support the Charter renewal process in our oce ● Managed half of our oce and facilitated a positive shift in oce culture and conversations. ● Attended and completed the BoardSource training for Non-Prot Boards ● Poster presenter at the Carnegie Summit on Improvement in Education in April 2020. Steven S. Alm is the current Prosecuting Attorney of Honolulu. A former Hawaii circuit court judge and United States Attorney, he was sworn into the position of prosecutor on January 2, 2021. Mr. Alm will be speaking about crime in Chinatown.

Saturday, April 5, 2025 8:00am - 11:00am McKinley High School Campus The 2024 Speech Festival comprised over 350 students from 34+ of our district’s elementary schools. We plan to have more students participating this year and as such, we will be needing a large number of judges yet again. The success of the Speech Festival for thirty-three years is possible because of the many volunteers from the district and school levels and from our community organizations and businesses. Please use this 2025 Speech Festival Judges (Google Form) if you are interested in volunteering to be a judge for the 2025 Honolulu District Speech Festival. You will receive more detailed instructions and information as the date of the event nears. |
