Since 1957, the Rotary Club of West Honolulu, District 5000, annually recognizes a leader of Hawaiian ancestry who has made a difference in Hawaii; someone whose accomplishments have epitomized the idea of high achievement in such fields as art, music, dance, education, science, government, religion, business or sports. The award was named after David Malo, an important Hawaiian minister and leader in the 1800's who exemplified the ideal of high achievement and community service for the betterment of the world around us.
Due to the pandemic, we paused the program and are happy to announce that we are holding the 65th recognition banquet on November 15, 2024, honoring Henry Kapono. Henry is a performer who has it all – vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, composer, audience favorite—and multiple honors and awards, including a Grammy nomination. He has taken home 21 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards (Hawaii’s “Grammy”) including Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year, Single of the Year, Album of the Year, Rock Album of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, Best EP, Compilation of the Year, and is the recipient of the 2021 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards for Contemporary Album of the Year for his latest album, Henry’s House, and the 2021 Favorite Entertainer of the Year.
The evening will begin with a no-host cocktail reception from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m., followed by a special opening ceremony, dinner, and program. The cost per individual is $130. Sponsor tables for ten people are offered at a cost of $1,170 each. If you would like to participate in this special event, please complete the reservation form and return it to the address noted on the form by the October 1, 2024 deadline. We hope that you can join us in celebrating Henry Kapono’s achievements!
