UPDATE:  WHR Community Service Project; Palama Settlement, Sat., July 20, 2019, 8 a.m. - 11 a.m.

Fellow Rotarians,

PE Mike Kato and incoming DG Eric Kaler have asked me (i.e. as the incoming Community Service Director) to schedule a community service project in July 2019, in lieu of the traditional DG Visit to the Club which usually occurs within the first few months of the Rotary Year. As a result, I have scheduled our first 2019-2020 community service project for Saturday, July 20, 2019, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.  The project will be held at the Palama Settlement (“PS”) where we conducted a beautification project next to the pool and parking lot last year. The project was a success and garnered a lot of praise from the PS’ Event Coordinator, Stephanie Tawata, and those that utilize the facility:

The project scheduled for July 20, 2019 will be similar in nature and will consist of cleaning a relatively small area adjacent to the gymnasium, removing a few inches of top soil, installing nylon edging and filling the area with gravel. There will be no planting this go-round because the area receives very little rain water.  The area to be cleaned is depicted in the following photo:

Participating members should wear “boro boroz” clothes and covered shoes. If you have yard implements such as wheel barrows, gloves, shovels, rakes and brooms, please bring those as well. It’s also a good idea to wear a hat and sunscreen as the summer sun can be killaz on your skin.  In addition to beautifying the area depicted above, members will be asked to pick up small amounts of garbage and vegetation leaves laying around the area.

PE Mike and I will be providing refreshments as well as mini bentos like the last time.

As you know, PS was established in 1896 and is a private, non-profit, community-based social service agency  serving the Kalihi and Palama neighborhoods which is located right in our service district.  For the last 120 years, PS has and continues to offer a wide range of educational, recreational, athletic, cultural, social, health, and community building programs and services for children, youth, adults, and senior citizens. Its mission is to partner with those who have the greatest needs in the community and empowering them to enhance their well-being through education, health and recreation.

#5

PS’ community services support the Mayor Wright, Ka’ahumanu, Kamehameha and Puahala Homes. Although PS serves people of all race and ages, it is instrumental in serving the new immigrant wave of Micronesia including, children, families and a large segment of home-bound elderly. PS provides for basic needs and programs that support the children, adults and elderly.

If you are interested in participating in our Club’s first community service project for the 2019-2020 year, please sign up by noting your attendance in the Doodle link which follows:

If you have any questions or concerns, please call me. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing all of your smiling faces at PS on Saturday, July 20, 2019, at 8 a.m.!
